If you have the threat of repossession, there may still be things that you can do.

Firstly, do NOT be tempted to ignore the letters or papers from the court or your mortgage lender. However difficult it feels, you MUST face the problem head on to avoid it getting worse.

Collect all the paperwork relating to your mortgage, mortgage payments, secured loans, letters from the lender(s) or from the court. It is very important you form a clear view of exactly what the situation is, what amounts are owed and what timescales have been set.

Some questions you need to find answers to:

  • Who is the lender on your mortgage and / or secured loan?
  • What is / are the mortgage or loan reference numbers?
  • What is the outstanding mortgage or loan amount?
  • What are the monthly repayments due?
  • How many payments have you missed?
  • Can you quantify the exact amounts missed in total on each mortgage or secured loan?
  • What is the interest rate on your mortgage or secured loan?
  • Are there any early repayment charges due if you repay now?
  • Have you agreed an arrangement with your lender for arrears owing?
  • Have any court dates been set?

Your mortgage should be your priority and you should always ensure you are in contact with your mortgage lender, especially if the repayment of the mortgage is or could be at risk. If any court hearings have been set, you must also ensure you do not ignore the notices and should attend the court hearings. There may still be options available to you provided you face things head on in time.
